Taichung Travel Tips

Taichung, officially known as Taichung City, is a city located in western Taiwan, with a population of over 2.7 million people, making it the third largest city on the island after New Taipei City and Kaohsiung. In 2010, it merged with Taichung County to form a single special municipality of Taiwan.

Taichung has a vibrant, diverse economy that incorporates traditional businesses, small family-run shops and factories, large industrial areas, and a thriving commercial sector.  Taichung is a transport hub of western Taiwan and is only an hour away from Taoyuen International Airport. From there, you can easily make day trips to other places like Kaohsiung, Tainan and Changhua. In recent years, the Government has successfully developed Taichung as a top travel destination by upgrading the public transport system and enhancing the quality of the tourism sports. There are lots of newly developed cultural and shopping areas which make Taichung a wonderful holiday destination. 

Climate and weather
Taichung has a warm humid subtropical climate, with an average annual temperature of 23.3 °C with the highest temperature of the year occur in July and August, while the lowest temperature occur in January and February.

Transportation
The public transport system in Taichung is well-developed so tourists can easy go to various tourist attractions by metro or bus. To make your trip more special, one can try the newly set up iBike by the Government. Citizens and tourists are encouraged to make use of the iBike services when making a transit to another spot.

Gourmet
The main draw for tourists is Feng Chia Night Market. It is one of the biggest night markets in Taiwan. Honestly speaking, no one visits Taichung without going to Feng Chia where one can find a great variety of local Taiwanese delicacies such as Oyster Omelet, Bubble Tea, Stinky To-fu, etc. With delicious food and affordable fashion that suit every generation, Feng Chia is a night market that is always crowded during the day as well.

Cultural Creativity Tourism Night Market, announced to be the largest night market in mid-Taiwan, is situated in the former ShuiNan Night Market. Boasting over 700 stalls with great variety of exotic and local snacks, this night market will serve appetite from around the world. Now, you know where to find Barbecue grills, teppanyaki, stinky tofu, French steaks, Mongolian barbecue, hot dogs, corn dogs and more.

Famous attractions
Tunghai University has one of the most beautiful campus in Taiwan. Other than the elegant atmosphere and lovely landscapes, you must have to check the Luce Chapel out. It is designed by the well-known architect I. M. Pei. Its unique shape is just like an upside down boat bottom and the Chapel is an important attraction of Taichung and a venue for Christmas celebration. Tourists are advised to take a good walk in the campus to explore the lake, pasture and to enjoy the relaxing movement under natural surroundings. Next to Tunghai University, you may visit Tunghai Arts Street and Tunghai Night Market, for snacks and goodies.

Gaomei Wetlands is located in Dajia. With windmills on the background, the extraordinary wetland scenery and the sunset, Gaomei Wetlands is a hot spot for photo shooting. The breath taking scenery during the sunset is truly a must see while visiting Taichung. For movies, music video, photos for magazines, this place is known for killing a lot of films or nowadays taking up a lot of memory space. It is also a top shelf location for biological research purposes or simply leisure bird watching. The Gaomei Wetlands is an excellent location for bird-watching. Migratory birds can be seen throughout various seasons. It can be a natural relaxing sensation, when you take off your shoes and soak your feet in the wetland.

The Taichung Station is one of the well-reserved heritages among the train stations in Taiwan. The architecture dates from the era of Japanese rule. The station and tracks within the city are slated to be replaced by an elevated station and tracks, which are currently being constructed. One can explore more about Taichung’s history. In addtion, tourists may also be interested in visiting Taroko National Park, Taichung National Park,  the National Taiwan Museum of Fine Arts and Yizhong Street for the overview of the Taiwanese culture and natural landscape.
